Hi all,

I am new here and am new to the whole turntable thing so you will have to excuse my silly questions and lack of knowledge.

I recently purchased a B&O beogram 1600 turntable.  My next step is I need to purchase an amp or set of speakers so I can actually play music.  The only thing is, I have no idea where to start.  I was originally hoping to purchase an old pair of speakers with a wood grain finish to match my turntable and because I like the old school sound.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what type of speakers I could use and what exactly I would need? Do I need am amp also?  Sorry, like I said I have no knowledge what so ever in this area.

If you have any questions for me that will help you help me, let me know.

Cheers, Jarred

welcome to the forum

Yes you can connect it to any amp by using a 5 pin DIN to RCA/phono converter lead. Don't be tempted to cut the DIN plug off and replace with RCA (phonos) as it will devalue it by no longer being original

Another pont to remeber is that the BG1600 doesn't have a RIAA (phono preamp) installed inside the turntable, so your amp will need to have this, if it is an older amp (20 years or more, it will most likely have a phono input, you need to select MM (moving magnet) on the amp if it has a switch to toggle between MM &MC

if you buy a new amp (which does not have an MM phono stage), you can buy a little external box that goes between your 1600 and the amp, but sometimes they are more expensive than a nice 20 year old amp that has been recently serviced

look for a Beomaster 1600 amp (this was the matching amp to the BG1600 deck at the time), around 1978 to 1986) the period they were sold

if your budget can stretch to it, be on the lookout for a nice pair of Beovox S45.2 speakers, they are revered on the forum, but I have a pair of S55 speakers and they sound pretty good to me as well in any B&O amp setup

World is your oyster really. A good sounding system would be your Beogram, a Beomaster 2200 and some S45.2s or S75s if you want more bass. The BM2200 is an unsung star with superb performance and interesting styling.

Thanks so much for your help.  Know of any good places I can purchase these old ones?  I'm in Australia so it would most likely have to come from online.

Apart from the Beomaster 1600 amp, would any of the other old B&O amps work?  I have come across a beomaster 1400.  I have not had any luck with the 1600 as of yet.

Depending on type. Nearly all af the older Beomasters has a preamp for turntable, You will have to check for voltage, Some of them has no voltage switch, and are made for only 220 or 110V.  There are 3 different models of the BM 1400, but check here
