The Beonic Man:

Daniel:

The logic of the new remote is great, but I miss sitting laidback in the coach with "The Power" in my hand and using it without lifting my arm.

Good point. It's strange how I seem to hold the Beo 4 90% of the time when watching TV or movies! Perhaps we will get used to it and it will be the same? Practice makes perfect! I do like that the new remote is lighter, although some say they miss the weight so we can't all win!

I really hope so. I did some practice during the soccer games yesterday, but it's hard. I started with my thumb on the OK button,  but my unsensitive finger just slides over the plastic.

One good thing is turning the stand. When I change position in the coach, I turn the TV after. Just one press up to the right on the remote, and then arrow left och right. No problem in the dark and much easier then on Beo4, just two clicks.

Millemissen:

Why are we chasing higher resolution/more pixels/4K?

We should be chasing 'better picture quality'.

MM

Absolutely agree, and y'all know I've said it before. Pixel count is way down the list of things that improve image quality. What seems to happen is that marketing works, and brightness works, so that everyone buys LCDs and ignore plasmas which are going away. For the present, plasma is the best combination of affordability (mature technology) and video performance.

OLED has great potential, but it hasn't dropped in price or increased in size as rapidly as I'd have hoped. There are production yield and longevity issues with OLED that are not yet sorted out perfectly, and may never be. Either inability to mature the technology will hit, or it will take them so long that everyone will be obsessed with the next marketing fad, and we will only have substandard sets to choose from.

This thread is going a bit off topic. However, today I installed an SSD in my Avant! It works well but the interface for time shifting and recording could be better (I still don't understand how to jump out of time-shift, haven't given the manual a try yet - it should not be necessary if the interface was designed from a UX perspective).

It´s a pity that recordings cant be read from another device - I would like to be able to store some recordings from it (like when I was in the audience at a soccer game a few days ago).

Michael VIMEO is now accepting 4K AND some videos allow you to download the uncompressed 4K original. Here's an example... A massive 2GB compared to the 1080p of 180mb!!!!!!!!

@ Elephant: Thanks for sharing. Say more about how it went and what you thought of the new Avant in person etc?

@ Michael: You sure putting that SSD their is a good strategy? Isn't it going to get too hot? Especially since users have commented how hot it gets at the back already. It's not blocking any vents is it?

B&O products are V1-32, BS2, H95, E8 and an Essence remote.

btw i loved the launch and the television.  I also love the remote, it's actually smaller than i thought, and i loved how it felt: modern and very user friendly.

I don't think it is an issue. An SSD does not develop as much heat as a regular hard drive (I wanted a silent and quick alternative to a noisy hard drive). And there is no vents in the cabling area. The electronics sits on the right and left side of the back and not in the middle so it is actually not hot. I might move it but I want to keep cabling out of the TV at a minimum.

• There is no vents there and the area is not hot - it is just a hollow space.

• The SSD draws about 0.069 watts in action, and idles around 0.054 watts - it won't get very hot.

• The USB port can't output more than ~2.5 watts.

• I see no reason for why it would be a problem - and a sales pitch is that you can put a drive and an apple tv in the space.

The CPU in my MacBook Pro goes up to 47 watts, and the GPU to 33 watts. They do much more work than the SSD - but sure, electronics can get very hot! But I think I am safe with the SSD.

@ Beonic Man - they had one BV, on the motorised floor stand, which is the floor model from the Collins Street store, where I'll go for a daytime look on Friday, before I head out of Melbourne again lol.  They are yet to have one with the table stand, which is probably a more flexible solution for a lot of people, especially those with television cabinets etc

@ elephant - yes you can! lol ;-) Seriously though it was pretty dark in there you could really only see others that were standing close.

I actually prefer it with the table stand, and if was in a position to get an avant that's the option i would go for.

I haven't had the time to read all the postings in this thread - so forgive me, if someone else has mentioned this...

But... My local dealer has just sent an e-mail, telling that B&O for a limited period of time sells the Avant with 5 years warranty instead of the usual 3 years...
Anybody else got this offer..?

If that's so I think it's a very smart idea...a good way to get buyers to not get gunshy about early teething problems is to make sure they feel like they have less risk with a longer warranty. Several car makers have done that when issues with a new model have cropped up. I know it would make me feel better about a high dollar purchase of a very new product.

As I had already had 3 show room visits I was polite and stayed back.

I took 3 other photos of the scene but it was way too dark so I deleted them.

The other challenge was that room was long and thin so since there was a crowd of 12 people in front of the BV no one could anything nor hear any dissertation !

They had BL18s playing the sound and the main source on the Avant for the evening was Spotify.

A 5 year warranty should be standard on all their products, to me this is an easy option and a positive message to any buyer why they should purchase B&O

we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.

I think its important to highlight that the 5-year warranty was announced and available ahead of the BeoVision Avant 55. In some quarters its been popular for some on this board to have invalid opinions about 4k and to amplify out of proportion the issues on the early delivered products.

I have to say that B&O have been exemplary. I had the first new Avant supplied by my dealership and on this board. Mine featured the issues and I raised them early last week and my new TV arrives in mid-July. Outstanding customer service.

Dropped by at my dealer today.

He had one Avant in the store - a 'faulty' one.

All others were sold/delievered to the costumers.

He showed me the marks behind the screen - indeed very visible, but only with the tv turned off.

When turning on the tv, you could see massive juddering, untill it 'found itself'/'settled down'.

Picture quality was pretty good then, even with a normal tv signal.

He was not proud at all - but this was his only Avant left, which was to be send back as soon as possible.

Next week he gets a delievery of 20 units - allmost all of them already sold.

Obvisiously they were too early brought to the market -  but I am confident that the company will handle this 'disaster' in the best possible way.

In three or four months time all will be forgotten, and people will enjoy this pretty beast as much as people enjoy the BV11.

By then we will discuss the 85" version on the forum Big Smile

Found a couple of UHD video websites:

http://demo-uhd3d.com

- offers several UHD videos as downloadable video files.

http://www.uhdvideos.net

- points to a lot of YouTube UHD content.

Question:

How do I play these videos on the Avant?

  • From a USB connected HDD or a memory stick? Can the Avant show 4K content from an USB source on its built-in media player?
  • Is the YouTube app on Avant 4K compatible?
  • Or do I need some external 4K video player connected to HDMI? If so, which video players are worthy of consideration?

Gonna test drive the Avant, and as there are limitations to its built-in 4K capabilities, which sources (internal / external) work for UHD content? Maybe some current Avant owners could give some advice on this, I'd appreciate it.

@KMA - you will most likely need something/an external  player, that can decode the VP9 encoded (Youtube) or the H.265 ecoded content.

And you must connect that 'device' to the HDMI1 - which is the port, that is used in the shops for 4K demo material from the UHD-Player.

Note: I don't know if the Avant already has a VP9-decoder built-in - after all that is free.

That would have to be tested from a Avant owner.

Thanks, I'd be interested to know if the YouTube App that's built-in can play the 4K YouTube videos (as the VP9 codec is free, like MM points out), and which of the 4K files on the UHD demo video website are playable from an USB connected device (if any). I suppose at least the videos under HEVC category are incompatible, but there's also a nice selection of H.264 videos.

Apart from Mac Pro / MacBook Pro, I'll try to find some other options for an external video player as well – something that would simply serve the purpose of a 4K video player that content can be loaded onto.

In the stores they use the Mad Catz M.O.J.O.

http://madcatz.com/mojo-update-released-ouya-4k/

So there will be a PUC for that already.

Seems to be a gaming cosole, but that is what I have seen used for demoing the 4K content.

Michael and others that have received their lovely Avants, what equipment do you have plugged in besides Apple TV.

I'd be interested to hear about if you have cable boxes, blu ray players, etc, and how and where you have positioned these?

I went to the dealer today and met Elephant, the dealer said about the stb bracket, but i thought i'd ask the group and garner their feedback.

Thanks in advance

Actually, I heven't got an Apple TV, yet.

So far I only have:

  • CAT cable to the Time Capsule (Internet access for updates, YouTube, Spotify etc)
  • DVB-T, to get the free TV channel (TV6) not included in my satellite channels
  • DVB-S2, with a CA module installed (satelite channels, Canal Digital)
  • XBox 360 to HDMI 2 (used for the kids gaming and whatching DVDs)

Bluray: Was about to get a Playstation 4, but to my surprise it doesn't do 3D. The OPPO is too much money as we selldom rent movies. I will wait until after the World Cup as there's no time for movies now anyway. This gives my some extra time to search the market for a good bluray (and maybe time for Sony introduces 3D for the PS4).

Apple TV: Same reason as for bluray. No time during World Cup, and maybe there will be a release date for the new Apple TV. Maybe I wait for that.

Hard disk: I will search the market for the right one (after you know what has finished).

Analogue: I believe it's a mini din 9 connection so I just ordered a "mini din 9 to 3*RCA" cable just to see if I can connect my old Nintendo 64. Probably a lousy picture quality, but I just must try.

The Smart TV-function is worthless, just a few apps available for download. Only the YouTube app is something to have, but the TV already have a YouTube function. Where's NetFlix, ViaPlay, SVTplay etc?

Positions:

  • The XBox 360 is standing visible on the floor, but in a corner. Can´t hide it as the kids connects different gaming attributes via USB and changes games often.
  • No cabel box as I us a CA module inserted in the Avant.
  • Rest of the equipment will be placed on a shelf in the heating room (as showed in this thread on one of my pictures). This will include the incoming Apple TV, hard disk, N64 and the bluray player.

I have not connected a lot of things yet:
• Apple TV (HDMI1 - for now)
• SSD for time shift/recordings from the built-in tuners, connected via the main USB-port (there is another one by HDMI6)
• DVB-C antenna for cable tv (no hd channels :/ on my network unfortunately - but I can pay extra, perhaps I will some day but I don't have time to watch a lot of TV anyway.)

Another thing of interest is this picture, I noticed that it looks like the frets and the aluminium plate might be replaceable easily. It all looks to be connected with rubber mounts.
