It is a GT6 convertible I had built for me in 1999. It has the chassis of a GT6 and the running gear along with the straight six 2.0 litre engine but has a Californian Spitfire body on top. It has a number of bespoke alterations - I went a bit mad as I could have had a respectable E-Type for the amount of money I spent on this but there again, I am happy leaving this with the roof down around Newcastle, which would be difficult to do with a Jaguar!

I have triple Webers to fit to it at some time - they are sitting in the garage at present. I did say to Lee we could go to Denmark some time in it, but for some inexplicable reason he seemed less than keen!!

It's lovely!! I of course remembered you had a GT6 but the soft top threw me!! (and I thought it was green)
Anyhooo................................ if you enter "Trunnion" into Google, and pick the automotive link of the Wiki thread (which is top of the page) it says in the first paragraph -
"........On many cars (such as those made by the Triumph Motor Company[10]) the trunnion is machined from a brass or bronze casting and is prone to failure.........."
Which tickled me no end - my brother used to have a Mk IV Spitfire and it spent more time on axle stands than it ever did on it's tyres! I'd never heard of a "king pin" before then!
Ban boring signatures!
A trunnion!

Mine were in fact in rather good nick! However when they do fail, the suspension collapses! Though to be fair, it is not the trunnion that fails, but the vertical link that sits in it. Which is why one should never forget to oil one's trunnions.
Peter:No front suspension at present!!
You'll have to try harder than that to fool me!
I see an anti-roll bar!
That car is gorgeous BTW!
Beo4 'til I die!

By vertical link, do you mean the upright/knuckle?! That would be a terrifying failure!

sounds like a line from Monty Python / Benny Hill / a Ronnie Barker poem

This is what my brother referred to as the king pin. It only failed twice (while I was in it) - there's something very special about the front passenger side wheel collapsing "in and under" so that you're pitched forward and down at some jaunty angle, whilst skidding to a grinding halt on your hubcap................especially in an open top car in the middle of town!!!
Definitely to be avoided if you don't like being the centre of attention and/or laughed at!
Which is the reason I am changing to the suspension used in racing Caterhams. Collecting bits and refurbishing the wishbones at this moment! All nice and shiny! No electronics in a GT6 so nice and simple!!
I had several Morris Minors in my youth.
The front suspension wheel supports consist of vertical steel castings (a long kingpin) with a threaded top. A sort of brass or bronze trunnion fits onto the threaded part allowing the wheels to pivot.
This type of suspension is notorious for failure but not quite as you might expect. Even with regular greasing, microscopic fragments of steel get embedded in the brass and then work abrasively on the threaded steel casting. On failure, the brass trunnion appears to be in perfect condition, but the steel threads on the top of the kingpin itself are almost completely worn away. Trunnion pops off, wheel collapses..... ! It wasn't just Morris Minors. 40 years ago cars at the roadside with front wheels at strange angles were a common sight!

King Pins, Links, and Trunnions, OH MY!
Of all the people I have come to know on BW, I believe only one knows what I really do (DID) while the Sun is shining.
Back in 19-dickety-aught, I was an engineer and owner of a prototype engineering firm.
One of our specialties (multiple patents area) was in the suspension of our equipment -specifically said king pins, links, and trunnions!
and... NO, Pounchy -NO FAILURES, catastrophic or otherwise!

Welcome aboard!
I just traded my last A8L this past month!
I keep trying to send photos, but have been unsuccessful doing this for BeoWorld. But since this thread keeps coming back, I can't resist posting.
In the past couple of years I've been hard at work on a book about high-performance driving and auto safety, and this has enabled me to build up a nice little collection of cars (for research, of course, of course). So, without photos:
A 2006 Honda Element (for lugging around BeoLab 5s, of course – I can fit 5 of them in nicely, plus a dolly).
A 2002 Audi S6 Avant Quattro with some reworking, a little rortier exhaust system (useful for going to the Symphony in Boston when its snowing – or even when it's not)
A 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 Spyder (Mitsu's twin-turbo AWD 4WS lil' monster with a retractable steel roof – they only made 800, for fun!)
A 2005 Morgan Aero 8 (the new aluminum Mog with a 4.4 BMW V-8 and gorgeous-sounding side pipes – pure essence of car!)
A 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG with the development package, for track days (to study hooliganism in the field).
And I just test drove a new Morgan 3 Wheeler, so if I can just lose 30 lbs . . .
Thanks for listening!

Aero and Avant for me!
What a diverse lineup! A little bit of everything! Well done.

Great to hear! I've heard similar comments from a few other people. I'm dying to test one!
Nice, reminds me of Wayne's car in Waynes world.
