Does anyone have an idea for a source for a proper FM antenna for the Beomaster 5000?

I have just about every connection under the sun, but nothing that will fit the 5000.

I tried two 2 meter wires stuck in the antenna ports made a T-formation and that helps a lot, but not good enough to be static free. (Of course if I stand there like some misplaced Greek statue holding the wires in the air the reception is PERFECT, but as I am not about to just stand there being a faux antenna, there has to be a better way.)

If there are no sources for a professionally made antenna, anyone have a better idea then mine, that is cutting a lamp cord and sticking it in the FM ports?

Thanks guys!

Jeff

Hi,

firs of all you need FM connector from 70-ties (two pin, 300ohm).

It looks like this, and it is quite hard to find. In my contry there are some occasionally available, I was not able to find it on international ebay auctions, my friend electrician found one for me in his old stock. Another source could be forum members here, who are renovating hifi from these days.

Then I connected this to this indoor anntena:

I found original B&O FM connector here:

Yes indeed, that is the plug I need. I also tried looking on eBay, but like you, found nothing.

If nothing else, I am persistent. I'll keep looking until I find one.'

Thank you for providing a visual of the plug.

Guys,

There are 3 different ohm connections on the Beomaster 5000 Tuner, which is the best one to use..... or the most powerful?

I have 2 antennas coming from China, 1 for my second and gift Beomaster 2400.2 and the other as a spare. So until I find the right antenna to "make do" I have no problem in cutting off the connector and soldering the wire ends to insert into the Beomaster 5000 FM sockets. What I have now is "almost good enough," but almost good enough is NEVER really good enough.

But it would be helpful to know which of the 3 FM plugs to use.

Thank you!

Jacques this is for you..... and Soren, of course.

You said the Beolab 5000 is a better amp then any other and I took your word for it. I played several records (for my personal pleasure) and the difference was not evident.

Today, I got SERIOUS and played E Power Biggs on the petal harpsichord: Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and oh my goodness, I "think" you maybe right. The Beolab produces amazing sound (thank you Soren).

It will take a few more records for me to make this kind of assessment, but right now, I'd say you were right. Smile

It all depends on your source, where you hear the difference is very good recorded LPs and CDs nowadays radio stations are transmitting digital and often bad recorded music, On most of my rock pop lps there is not too much difference if some at all, But if you have the Bette Midler its the girls LP try that one and the BL 5000 will come to its right, with the same BG to my BM 4400 I hear more details on the BL

Antennas check this http://technical.beoworld.org/Aerial/default.asp

Your mail !! will answer tomorrow (Checking things)

Hi Søren,

That is a GREAT idea to play the Bette Midler “It’s the Girls” album. I will try that tomorrow with enormous enthusiasm. Big Smile

Sadly, I can not compare the Beolab 5000 with the Beomaster 4400, as my 4400 gave its notice the day your 5000 arrived. Just an odd coincidence, but timely.

Thank you for the antenna post….. I am working on this “issue.”

As for my email, Søren, I am in no hurry for an answer. The question vis-à-vis the Beolab is more a curiosity and anything else. The Beomaster question is something I need help with, but it will wait.

PLEASE know this; I am delighted with the Beolab 5000/ Beomaster 5000.

Everything is just perfect then, Beolab wise.

However, what were the odds on the demise of the 4400 just when the Beolab set arrived?

Well, the poor thing just knew it didn't stand a chance and therefore committed suicide. That's quite obvious.

Hi Jacques,

As the great detective Hercule Poirot would have said, "Sadly, this was not a case of suicide, this was murder." And it was murder alright, plain and simple. That those 40 year old NOS caps lasted 3 years is remarkable in and of itself.

The timing; I admit looks abjectly suspect, no doubt giving the august monsieur Poirot considerable pause for thought.

To this day I have never really known what a Beomaster 4400 "can" sound like, as my wretched beast was so handicapped from the beginning with NOS caps and cleaned trimmers. First NO bass, then too much bass, DRAMATIC volume changes, and don't forget months of burning chemicals filling my house with fumes each time I had the temerity to turn it on...... fire extinguished always nearby.

It finally settled down and I got pretty good use from it, if not remotely what the 4400 was capable of.

Most recently, about 5 months ago the volume level dropped before the warning lamp would light, then without real warning a terrible screech and the right channel died. The 4400 came back a bit under LOW volume (with the 5000 in transit) but the last time I tried it, the sound quality was terrible  and it was clear it was best to unplug the 4400.

The Beolab 5000 arrived a week earlier then expected and I had the perfect spot for it.

Jeff

Hi Ralf,

I was just wondering which of the 3 available connection was the "best" to use.

I had to get into the Beomaster and in so doing I "disturbed" the temporary antenna that I have and by accident the reception is now glorious pulling in, static-free my favorite classical station in Seattle, KING-FM 98.1.

Hi Jacques,

Perfect? I didn't say that as these new restorations shipped internationally have teething pains.

I had two small "issues" that I asked Soren for help with.

First the Beomaster 5000 had a significant "grinding" in the center of the frequency dial. Soren suggested a loose screw on the tuner slider and he was right. Well it was either one of the two screws or the rivet in the center. Tightening the screws didn't solve the problem, so I filed down all three, and no more problem.

In order to calibrate the tuner slider, I used my trusty Beomaster 2400.2 and found the Beomaster 5000 FAR superior in sound quality as compared to the 2400.2.The sound really IS wonderful! Big Smile

I also managed to "disturb" my make-shift antenna and by accident have my favorite classical station coming in static-free from Seattle [KING-FM 98.1]

The other "problem" Soren asked me to post on the forum. (This is probably the wrong forum, but for now....) When the Beolab is set to 4 or 5 volume the two lamps blink completely on and off. Soren says he thinks something is drawing too much power and to ask you guys.

I just asked.

If this is too technical for this particular forum, I will re-post it on the "workbench" forum. But for now, I am enjoying my new "toy."

The postman brought me a lovely box today - and inside was a long sought item...

...a Beopower 600 with its box. It will go perfectly with my Beolit 400 and 600 but just needs a little fixing where one of the solder joints has broken.

I had mine restored by Soren de Mexico and in this household, we don't even talk about the 5000. Silence is indeed golden at times. Crying

But I do have Frede's handsome reproduction front panels on both the Beolab and the Beomaster 5000 and they look wonderful! Thank you Frede!!!

My latest find is gonna leave you guys breathless..... are ya ready?

I found a proper antenna for my Beomaster 5000 receiver. Oh yea, I knew you'd be impressed.

A little disappointing, this handy little gadget, mounted to the Beomaster the arms get caught in all the wires from the Beolab and they rub against the body, with no adjustment..... not B&O finest design.

Worse, although the signal strength improved from 50% to 75% the static increased dramatically. I moved those arms in every direction possible with the constrains of the poor design and can't get rid of the static.

I had been using plain lamp cord with better results and am thinking of disconnecting the B&O antenna, but leaving it in place as an authentic accessory, while using the lamp cord as the "real antenna." I think this B&O antenna can best be described as kitsch...... in the same league as an orange kidney-shaped fifties coffee table..... so ugly it is cute. Stick out tongue

And nice antenna, I have just about managed to pick up my jaw from the floor now!

Are you sure it's intact? It sounds ridiculous with an antenna that poor for that system. Anyway, If it's the one from all the pictures then it has to there ;-)

I am not entirely sure you approved of the antenna or really disapproved of it. I had a "choice" of a more modern one, or this one which came off a Beomaster 5000 directly.

The antenna locks snugly to the back of the Beomaster, but there is no possible movement forward or back, so it hits the Beomaster shell. Rather poor design, I say.

With the rabbit ears in the extended "V" position the Beomaster looks for all the world like a 1960 black and white television. Funny actually, and in the extended position the reception is fairly strong, but with static. Now with the arms all the way down, the reception drops to 20%.

I have noticed (immediately) that the wires are frayed going into the plug, yet still intact. I don't know if this fault is enough to cause the static, and if so, I don't have any idea how to get into the plug to properly solder the wires to the antenna posts. Unsure

We'll just see, the antenna may well become a static display rather than a working antenna.

Yes I do approve of it, quite a lot actually. It's very good fun to find just the right accessories, that are typical of the time and originally offered with the system. That goes for any system really. There's nothing better than finding just that thing you've been looking for Smile Practicality is not always important.

And apart from testing it with another tuner I have absolutely no idea how to check whether it is in good working order or not.

I tend spend way too much energy getting things back in good working order eventhough I'll never use them. But If it's there, it has to work. If it ever was supposed to work Hmm

I agree. I found the antenna in the UK from a very nice seller.

As I don't believe I can get into the plug, I am planning to try to reinforce (with more copper wire) the leads into the plug/connector. Maybe that will help with the static.

Again, I am really glad you approve. I was afraid that you thought the rabbit ears antenna was tacky and of poor quality for a Beomaster 5000.

In case anyone is interest (Jacques) the Beolab is absolutely amazing. Thank you Soren, my friend and marvelous restorer. Smile

Here is another little accessory for my BS6500 that arrived in the mail earlier today.  After having been back and forth with the previous owner for some time, we found a price that suited the both of us.

And yes it's 'just' a white Beolink 1000. But the white finish appears to be orignal from the factory. The look and feel of it is very similar to the grey version and notice the black letters. He had got hold of the white top and battery cover and fitted them to a normal mk2.

I haven't been able to find any information of when/if it was offered for sale. Or if it should have white sides aswell. Anyway for the moment I'm very pleased.

I have one, too and It's identical to yours. I got it (as used) from my local dealer couple of years back. His understanding was that the white version was sold with some white-coloured Beovisions.

Quick update on the antenna for my Beomaster 5000.

Took everything apart and all was good except the connection at the plug, 2 stands of wire on one post and 3 strands on the other. Not good. Cut the wire back and now have full wire contacts..... what a difference. Smile The static is gone and I have my beloved KING-FM Seattle, 90 miles away, coming in nice and clear.

Of course I found that NOT placing the antenna on the Beomaster was FAR better than having it in it's slot on the back of the Beomaster. Laying flat with arms extended really makes all the difference in the world. Plus the rabbit ears sticking up looked tacky in the extreme.

What a wonderful instrument this Beolab 5000 and Beomaster 5000 make!

I was offered this a free so how could I resist... a Beocord VHS 91.2 Smile

Produced in 1987-1989 this model was the last bulky Beocord VHS before the great (and slim) VX5000 series. I am not sure but I believe the pre-VX5000 machines were mostly OEM, with custom cases and possible interface-mods.

It has a Datalink connection with an audio-only mode (8 hours for an E240 tape!) for connection as TAPE2 fe. with Beomaster 5500. I might give this a try at some point!

Behind the front-flap is a whole row of buttons and manual tracking and audio rec volume pots.

I was not expecting it to work right away, and it didn't. It did load and eject tape properly, would wind and rewind for a while but not play. A quick peek under the bottom cover showed that two loading gear drive belts were slipping. This was soon fixed with a thorough clean with rubber cleaning/restoring spray (and lubricating the following gears, as mentioned here). Soon I had picture, and with some more cleaning, even the Hi-Fi sound came up.

I can't say I miss the VHS days but at least this kept me entertained for one evening Stick out tongue

Very retro cool indeed.

VHS tapes don't seem to last "forever" which is both surprising (to me) and sad. I replace what I can on DVD, but a good many things never made the leap from one medium to the newer DVD.

I am now "down" to 1,200 VHS tapes and still enjoy the bits of "recorded history" that they provide.

Enjoy your new find! Big Smile

Excellent Jacques,

Well I say it looks spectacular, even if it is Phillips not B&O.

Off subject, but as I have your attention, you had mentioned Beolover blog and I had seen the one where he demonstrated the meter functions on the Beocord 5000, that video is what pushed me to go for the one in Seattle. However, now I see there is a video (among others) showing exactly how to change the belts. Beyond interesting.

A full stack? Cool!

i have to say I used to hate 80's non-B&O stereo design, but starting from early in the decade, they are beginning to look strangely attractive again. I guess design fashion goes in 30-40 year cycles. I still regret getting rid of my bought-new Sony tuner and amp from 1982. In retrospect, they were quite Dieter Rams-ey without any unnecessary buzz and fuzz.

Talking of which... I'm tempted, but no. No. Do not have the space.

Hi Jacques,

I rather suspect you are right about the inspiration.

After watching the belt video I "feel" I can probably change the 5 belts, but I am concerned about other unknown issues (Caps, resistors, and full lubrication.)

I just ran into a problem with my handsome Beocenter 9000, got the belt for the cassette from Martin (who else?) and that improved things considerably, BUT now press play and the belt slips, so gotta go back in and lube everything I can find to lube. Should have done that in the first place.Embarrassed

Today I went on to test the audio-only recording. I grabbed a B&O 7-pin DIN-cable, connected it between my Beomaster 7000 and the Beocord VHS 91.2. Ok, I can start the Beocord thrue my Beomaster and I can hear the audio track from a video recording. But why am I not getting any audio into the Beocord? Oh yes, it has manual rec.level adjust... the rec.level adjust was turned up but still nothing? Read thrue the manual, tried to think about it but no, still couldn't get anything recorded. Ok, perhaps it's just not working, let's put the Beocord aside and forget it...

Only then I realized that the 7-pin cable I used was marked "PH" for Phono...
