What are the better 70's B&O speaker?. From 1968 to 1975 and little speaker. What do you think about Beovox 2200?
Beovox 2200 is a very good speaker for its size and age but the Beovox 1100 is even better, same size butwith a dome tweeter rather than a cone.
Beovox 1700/1702 is also quite good. In my opinion better sounding than the later CX50 and CX100 but I'mgetting old and care more about what sounds pleasant to me than what looks best in the printed specs.

Anyone else have any suggestions?
I have a pair of early Bvox 1600, 2 way, later productions was 3 way, hanging on the wall wide apart they sound very good with good bass and detailed highs, of the wall, no bass and sound boring. they have rubber surrounds in the drivers, so no problems there.
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
I heard these in Eddie's last week and I thought they sounded great.
This might sound like a stupid question but do they only work on solid walls?
The Beovox 5700 was IMO the best of the early big box uniphase designs
Vinyl records, cassettes, open reel, valve amplifiers and film photography.
So is the later, 3-way version better? Have you heard them?
An what do you think about S45 ore S45-2 speaker? Have they rubber too?
The S45-2 is the best bookshelf sized speaker made by B&O. Remember that B&O did make system speakers - that is that speakers did seem to be designed with the performance of systems in mind. The Beovox 1200 is not a great speaker but suits the Beomaster 1200 brilliantly. The S45-2 works well with almost everything I have tried it with. It has a rubber surround to the woofer.

Never heard the 3 way, as for the wall type, I dont think it will make much difference, I have concrete walls with 2 cm gypsum applied, its just a question of getting some reflection, a wood wall will do the same.
Algor: An what do you think about S45 ore S45-2 speaker? Have they rubber too?
S45 has foam surrounds, S45s are very placement critical.
pepps:Beovox 1702 are beautifully clear and neutral. Lots of detail.
These have been on my 'Need To Get' list for ages.
Beo4 'til I die!
Ahem,
And as for my personal recommendation - The S45-2. Absolutely spectacular, well rounded, rich and clear as a bell. Can't praise them enough.
The original S45 does also have rubber surrounds as the driver units are identical to the S45-2. The later S45 with foam surrounds was a two-way low cost version of the S55.

Beovox S45 (6427) is a 2-way speaker and has foam surrounds.Beovox S45 (6302) & Beovox S45-2 (6312) are both 3-way speakers and they have rubber surrounds (but lose magnets).
Re 5700s, I have a damaged pair of these sitting here not in use. It's mostly cosmetic damage but one of the bass cones isn't functioning perfectly.
Pity, because they're really great speakers.

Thats a real pity, you should try to repair them, do you have the stands as well ?
Unfortunately not.
Take a look at this,
one speaker works fine and in the other one only the big driver in the centre is working, i've checked all the wiring to all drivers and all ok , also did not no that B&O used kef ABRs and celestion drive units in these speakers.

The caps in the crossover looks wrong, is that original??
Not sure have not seen the inside of another pair, all i know is the speaker layout has changed to 5700 and the ABRs in the 5702 are large ovell shape and are kef units. so what could need replaceing to get top to drivers to work.
The mid and tweet could both be blown. The caps could be completely dead/open circuit. Damage to circuit boards or wiring somewhere. For old speakers caps are often a problem. I just have been playing around with a set of very old Allied "triaxes" meaning a woofer, coax tweeter, and whizzer cone for a midrange. Caps were dead on both of them, I guess they were made in the 60's.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
Here is the scheme from the online manual, but the the scheme does not correspond with the part list, be careful if you change caps, it looks like someone tried to mach the original values with 2 or 3 caps in parallel. That may also be the reason that it does not work, maybe wrong connected or caps bad. Maybe someone with a 5700 could check it.
Sorry didn't work with copying, will post pics
Here goes
marc:Thanks for that, so there will be no difference between 5702 and 5700 inside if so does it mean the only changes between speakers were the ABRs and speaker layout. Marc

Here is what Beocentral says:
The drive unit compliment consisted of a 10” Philips woofer, a 2.25” Celestion dome midrange and a 0.75” Celestion dome tweeter, the bass unit being supplemented by a 10” passive radiator of B&O’s own design. This model was later replaced by the lightly modified Beovox 5702.
I wonder would it be a good idea to replace the speaker cable in the 1600 speakers with something heavier?
If my memory is still doing fine, the Beovox 5700 and 5702 only share the dome midrange. The other drivers are different.
just had one of the 5702 speakers checked and was told the two smaller speakers were blown, whats the chances of getting replaecment.
There are companies that will repair your drive units - I had a woofer of my M100s repaired. I was hoping to have pictures of this but the firm never sent them! They did however repair the drive unit well!
I have some 5700s I might be selling for parts if that would help.
That post was a reply for marc BTW

The slightly earlier S45 has similar performance although I suspect the S45-2 gets all the referencing because it's easier to keep it distinct from the later 1980's S45s.
The earlier S45's have moulded resin backs instead of the flat MDF back of the S45-2. The S45-2 also has a metal trim on the rear edge that the S45's don't have. It's as if B&O saved some money with a cheaper speaker back but then spent the savings on the extra edge trim! Did the moulded resin back give a better speaker performance????
Graham
I think the flat back was made so the speaker looked better mounted on the floor stands. Don't think it made any difference to the sound - is it MDF or is it ply?

Also were not the resin back original S45 designed for the trumpet stand or they could also be wall mounted. I had a pair for awhile and it was slighly smaller than the S45-2 but had the same sound quality.
