Hello, I just bought a pair of Beolab 50 and I am getting them delivered in a few days.

I tried to find the necessary manuals for connections and installation but can’t find them anywhere online. Anyone know where to find the necessary information? All I can find is the technical sound guide. And how to setup presets.

That’s good but makes no sense if I can’t even install them 🤷‍♂️.

Beolab 50, Beolab 8000 x 2, Beolab 4000 x 2,
BeoSound Core, BeoSound 9000, BeoSound Century,
BeoLit 15, BeoPlay A1, BeoPlay P2, BeoPlay H9 3rd Gen, BeoPlay H6, EarSet 3i,

The technical sound guide is the only manual I know of. Everything you need to set them up is in it.

There are is a good video on the B and O page from Geoff Martin on setting up presets. Add the 50s to the app just as you would any other product. I set mine up using the Technical Sound Guide.

Thanks,

I read it yesterday but I wish I could find more data on how to mount the panels etc. I feel a bit unsafe taking delivery and assembling everything without steady instructions.

Need to know which cables to purchase and where to buy the microphone and so on.

Buy the microphone from your dealer. As for the panels, there are three metal vertical pieces that go between the speaker grills. Gently pull on those to remove. The speaker grills then push in to place and push the metal panels back on. I think in the Geoff Martin video on presets it shows the removal process.

Okey great, thanks. Do you know the price of the microphone? Don’t want to pay over price :).

A bit weird that there is no manual for installation but I will use the information from the sound guide and the videos. I guess I also need to buy a special Powerlink cable to send audio from my TV? I have thin powerlinks for my current Beolab 20 and I am a bit worried how to solve that as I now have the cables in the floor...

It seems impossible to find good info on this from B&O. I guess there is manuals available to

Service people but I have already been waiting three months for a repair man so getting an installation (and paying for it) is not even an idea in my mind. And I prefer doing it myself as technology is my main interest in life.

I don’t remember the price of the microphone, sorry. If you can connect them to an ethernet cable instead of by WiFi, setup will probably go a little easier. As for the Power Link cables, if my memory is correct, I used the same ones that I was using with my 20s. Not sure specifically which cables they are.

Yes cabled installation definitely. My Beolab 20 was unstable in wisa and I don’t like that feeling.

I will do cables installation but as I can’t find any info on which cables or even how to best connect it in a bit lost. It’s a bit silly for such an expensive speaker I think.

I also will have a BeoSound core for use to stream music from phones and such. I guess it can be connected via DLP and that the Avant 55 can not. But I have no clue. Ethernet is just used for communication with the app and for software updates right?

So Ethernet for config and updates

Powerlink (mk3?) for tv sound

Optical for core (or possibly dlp)

And then I’ve read so many issues with cables and cat7 suggestions etc and there is no info to be found. I can’t believe they require cat 7 cables as so much else works well over even cat 5e. But analogue signals of course is another question.

I missed that you use the same cables. I use the thin Powerlink for ice speakers. I have had them since my Beolab 9 and they work well with 20 too. But 50 might need something else as they have the Lens and I need the tv to be able to adjust it so I don’t have to fiddle in an app manually, right?

You did not miss it. I added it as an edit to my post so I am sure it was not there when you read the post the first time. I also had 9s connected to my BV7 before the 20s and then the 50s. I have a Core also connected to the 50s using the optical.

Yes, ethernet/WiFi is for communication with the app and for updates.

I also have an ir eye connected to my 50s so I can use a BR1 or Essence for volume control.

I was curious about this. I might want the essence remote because I miss being able to just turn on something without a device (phone etc). I have Sonos around the house and just having a play button is pretty nice.

So ir to beolab, not core?

I have an older Core so it does not have an ir input. I can control the Core with the BR1 in Bluetooth mode and the 50s with either the BR1 or Essence Remote in ir mode.

Interesting and confusing. But Ive now spent two more hours trying to find info on which cables to use and buy to no avail. Its almostimpossible to know as the sound guide only specifies the kind of technology and not the physical cables themselves. For powerlink only impedance and features are explained. It doesnt say which ml cables could be used or should be used. Neitherdoesit say anything about what kind of cable is to beused for dpl between the speakers.

As far as i understand dpl is digital and IP based, and whati gather from other pages online its a 100 mbit ethernet connection. I dont know weather this can be sent over a switch or need to be straight between and i dont know what kind of cable is preferred. If its only 100 mbit and IP basedthen almost any ethernet cable should be more or less perfectly transparent, right?

Anyone herewho has more knowledge or info about this?

I dont want to blow up my new speakers..Smile

@Michael

Just wondering why the dealer from which you have bought the 50, isn’t able to give any guidance as for which cables should be used?

P.S. Did you already have a look here:

There is a tv - and there is a BV.

Not asked yet but will do as soon as I have time. I prefer learning stuff from documentation and not sellers though. And the installers themselves are not in the store.

I did look there but didn’t find really what I needed to know. But I believe after reading about AVB that the digital connection between the speakers just need to be a solid Ethernet cable. And I believe that I need a fully cabled Powerlink to be able to communicate data between the Avant and the Beolabs (for adjusting the Lens/wide narrow). I might try to use WPL in the meantime as I have the thin PL leads with a DIN to RJ45 connectors today. Or just use them and adjust via profile. Might be better stability wise as I use WiFi 5Ghz.

I remember when I tried fully cables PL with RJ45 in one end and DIN in the other that I got some humming with my Beolab 9s. I returned those cables and used my old Mk3 cables and that was better, and has worked flawlessly with my Beolab 20s and still does.

So seemingly there should not be too many issues. My main issue practically though is that the cables must fit under a thin slice of wood as my walls have openings in them to my kitchen and a corridor on respective side of the TV. Thick and hard to bend cables will cause issues so thin and flexible is a priority - but so is sound quality..). I might have to find a new room layout.

And, I need to decide if I keep the 20s as surround speakers instead of the current 8000s that fill that work well today. Or sell the 20s. I do love them so much. Extremely good speakers and probably more beautiful and compact than the 50s..

There is an installation manual for the BL90.

I would imagine that the BL50 is very similar. Includes unpacking, moving, initial (vague) setup, calibration etc.

I would say the manual is way beyond what you would receive from a high-end Separates manufacturer or loudspeaker manufacturer as I think it is assumed the individual knows how to connect an XLR cable to an XLR socket etc....

Powerlink (PL) or DPL has been a little different (but simpler) and the BL90/50 work the same as all other Beolabs except for the DPL common connect (between the Master and Slave).

Ultimately, connections are down to what you want to connect and it has been a traditional B&O USP that the Dealer (clueless that they usually are) set up the loudspeaker of this class for you and show you the features.

Using the calibration service is simple but daunting at first.

I will try to PM you a BL90 manual for what it is worth but unless you are out of sorts with your Dealer, then that would be the best place to try?

Thanks, is it really just a cat7 cable that is to be used for the analog transfer of Powerlink from the TV? As it’s an analog signal it feels a bit wrong but maybe not. And also very overkill.

More or less this kind of information is exactly what I feel is missing and that it is really not acceptable for a product in this price class. We shouldn’t have to guess. Or resort to forums to find the true answer.

Hello,

Thanks for the explanation. This manual I can not find online on neither the 90 or 50. So it seems B&O are actively hiding it from the customers, I take that as them not wanting their customers to install themselves. As I want to do so I do need it. My dealer however always tells me they are not allowed to share material from the internal systems. I haven’t asked about this one but I have asked before many times and never been able to get any of the information I have requested.

We just have one in the entire half area of Sweden so I guess they are afraid of punishments or something.

Anyway I find it a bit weird I cant find unboxing and installation information at all. If it exist it should not be hidden away from the customers who can actually afford this.

Hello again,

Are you sure it is a Cat 7 cable from the avant to master? I tried to find more info and used the global training videos as help. In that video the guide, Christian, specifically says states that a PL RJ45 is very different from a DPL cable (That is a common ethernet wired cable). So it should, in my mind at least, not work to use a Cat7 cable between the Avant and Beolab 50 as they are wired differently to begin with. Image here.

I also have to add that I think cat7 is a bit of a bad way of setting the bar as even Cat7 cables can exist without shielding. And I also am quite unsure if this is even necessary for the communication happening between the speakers. It's not really a lot of data that flies between them and in a short cable I can't see many issues arising except for the fact that latency is key. But it would be nice to do some testing, which I will do probably. Strangely they advice not to use a switch in between whereas AWB forum clearly states that that is one of the main advantages of the technology (namely that it can travel easily in this kind of hierarchy).

@Michael

Why would you need a switch - you are only making a connection between the two speakers.

In an AVB-based setup there usually are several devices (not just speakers), that are connected to each other.......and a switch makes totally sense there.

MM

There is a tv - and there is a BV

I don't, for now. But the question is not about what I need it is just a general question as I am interested in how DPL works and the future of it. For now, yes it is just between two speakers. But in the future it might very well be so that a TV sends the audio over DPL to multiple speakers simply using one cable that transports data to internet, speakers and everything else. The bandwith is certainly there. Either a switched network for speakers and internet each or one gathered network.

Another reason a switched network might be necessary is a lack of inputs. As far as I know BL50 has two DLP connectors, and BL90 has three. BeoSound Core for example aslo has DPL so I suppose B&O is trying to migrate over to this platform. I am more or less confident that even BeoSystem 4 has DPL hardware as there is for future use-ports on them (but the development has probably been stopped for these unfortunately).

So thats the reason, to begin with. Another is that more and more houses (including my own) has ethernet sockets around the house and in the rooms. Simply being able to connect your devices over that network and not having to worry about what kind of patching the cables are set up with would also be beneficial and less worrysome.

Getting the speakers standing and connected is not an issue. You do need to know how to connect the CAT7 cable but that info is available on line.

But if your experience goes like mine did getting connected to the internet is simply your worst nightmare! I am with Telia and apparently that is the worst internet supplier to get these speakers in interact with? (So B&O dealer tells me) Plus there is zero information anywhere on how to do this? I lost 2 weeks of my life doing it!!  I am sure the idea is that your dealer make the installation for a price of course.

Your dealer should be able to lend you a microphone and the stand for it too? The app takes you through the configuration.

But forget all you know about plugging in speakers. These are something else until they are set up.

Be prepared for a long slog. Good luck.

Yes Michael, cat7 double shielded is recommended. You can do others but if you get sounds artifacts or anything of the sort that’ll be on you and you’ll probably have to buy them again anyway. So cat7 from avant to master 50 and cat7 from master to slave

Don’t put anything inbetween that either. It seems like you’re trying to do to many things at the same time.

I’m not trying to do too much I simply want to learn how DPL is used and how it works and behaves Smile.

I see that Powerlink impedance is 100 ohm, which is the same for CAT cables as well. As long as they are shielded it should be good. Cat7 Shielded should be double shielded (which also cat5/6 can be depending on which edition, just like cat7).

An issue with Cat cables is that they more usually are made of thicker single lead cooper wires and not multiple thinner ones as regular audio cables and power cables. The reason for this is that you want to limit inter cable interfearance when sending data bits. However with analog sound I believe that it’s a different question and mainly handling wise a cable made of thinner wires are much more flexible.

I read that Sounds Heavenly cables are flexible so I believe they are adhering to the shield and ground feature of Cat7 but uses thinner and many more wires per channel in the rj45 connector making it more flexible and probably also more audio optimal (and less data optimal).

But of course I don’t know yet as there is so little documentation available to the general public.

But anyway, for DPL I would assume that a data design is better as it is digital packet based transfer and that for analog PL the audio design is better.

But as DPL seems to be 100 mbit only I think both designs would suffice at least in low meter lengths.

And of course, using a switch would not work for analog PL over RJ45. But for DPL it should be of no issue, as long as the switch is compatible with the AWB protocol design.

Cat7 is such a vague term also as it can be so much different. For the real Cat7 a GG45 connector has to be used as well but since speakers probably won’t run 100gbit network between them the regular connector rj45 is used.

And, as I wrote earlier a regular Cat7 cable has a different wiring scheme than a powerlink lead. So wouldn’t a Cat7 cable be wrongly wired from an Avant that outputs powerlink?
