The less traditional approaches of hers aren't quite as good to me, but she does have an amazing voice. The song out of the movie that got a hook into me was "Follow Me" and it is one of her best in my opinion. I like some of her "traditional" renditions - but others have disappointed where the band has been given too much space for improvising. I picked songs from some six albums and I know am adding a song here and a song there. And will buy a whole album soon. This is part of the collection:

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
I have just started watching the English tv-series "Life on Mars". A science fiction/crime/drama series from 2006 -2007.
It's about a modern-day Manchester cop who - after a car accident - wakes up in 1973. Has he died, has he gone mad, is he in a coma - or has he really gone back in time? The title is referring to the David Bowie song "Life on Mars" - and there's a LOT of early seventies music throughout the series.
Here's a bit from a review:'There is a "Law and Order" style crime to solve in each episode, combined with a "Mad Men" way of reanimating a bygone era's aestethics - along with a "Lost" style supernatural mystery that looms spookily over the programs whole arc, stringing the viewers along with dribbled-out clues and revelations.'
It's actually quite funny and well-made. I started watching it on the Danish channel TV2, where it was aired after midnight - so I didn't watch every episode.But then I found both Seasons on DVD. Two boxes for 200,- DKKr (approx. £ 20 or 36 US$).
There was made a U.S. version of the series in 2008 - but it didn't do well in the states. If anyone should want to see it, I will recommend the original U.K. version.
And there has even been a Russian remake of the show called "Dark side of the Moon" - titled after - you know who...
But, the original UK series is worth watching just for the music - for those of us who remember the seventies.

By the way, if you're into anime, or even just want to watch a good one to see what the fuss is about, Ghost In The Shell: Innocence is an awfully good one. One of them most philosophical animes, quotes from Milton, the Bible, Voltaie, etc. A fairly deep story line, with amazing animation and great sound. Perhaps not quite the grand masterpiece Akira is, but up there.

It's that time of year Rich. My wife takes a day, drinks eggnog, wraps packages, and watches every old, sappy Cristmas movie in existence. I wind up being so poisoned by the saccharin sweetness of it alli have to resort to watching the Blackadder Christmas Special as a cynical antidote.

Kind of cool you frequent the same pub! He's a talented comic, I've loved his Blackadder stuff, the Bean stuff not as much, but then I was never as fond of Benny Hill as I was of, say, Dave Allen. He can turn a comic facial expression though.

I just finished watching the first season of a TV series called Falling Skies. It's about resistance fighters in Massachusetts fighting an alien invasion. After a somewhat slow start it developed well, although one of lead characters, the professor, is kind of an idiot. Some of it doesn't ring true, for example they found various people collaborating with the aliens, and let them live. We all know what would really happen, just look at what the French Resistance did to collaborators.
I did notice one thing, after the alien apocalypse, all the women left alive are hot. Funny how that works on TV isn't it?
The third season has just ended I think on TV, and the 2nds not available on DVD yet, so I guess I have a hiatus before I can binge watch again.

I tried one episode (maybe it was a iTunes freebie, or a bored day on cable) but there was not enough bite to attract me to come back a second time.
Just finished a season of Scott & Bailey - something we like mainly for the development of the characters over the years.
I agree, it's not the bees knees, and I'm kind of ambivalent as to when I ever get to the rest of them. Too much in the way the humans responded didn't ring true to me, but were Politically Correct I guess. I'm interested to see where the end of season 1 cliff hanger goes, but not interested enough to fret about it.
Now, Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, that one had a hook in me, the shows were innovative, the plot went sideways at times in completely interesting and unexpected ways, and it was actually artistic in places. So naturally they set up a huge plot shifting cliff hanger, then cancel the show. Fox tends to do that, they have no idea how to deal with an actually good show. Like Firefly.
The new season of Vikings starts in February over here. I'm really looking forward to that.

Yeah, they canceled that one right as it was getting really interesting. Ditto for Terra Nova, I was really getting into that, one season, bang, gone. But still and all the one that really gripes me was Firefly.
Also, Space: Above and Beyond, great show, canceled. And on Showtime they had two shows for what they called SciFriday, Stargate, and Total Rekall 2070. Stargate was a fun little shallow ditty, but ultimately kind of silly and very derivative. Total Rekall was a dark, paranoid, dystopian piece that was truly thought provoking and very well done. Guess which one got canceled and which got picked up and ran for the better part of a decade?

Ah yeah, Stargate.
Space:Above and Beyond was based on the old series Combat that followed a squad, in either WWII or Korea depending on season. Not a single show with a happy ending, maybe that had something to do with the cancelation.
The new version of Robocop. Dreadful, amazing how you can have that big an SFX budget, that many big name actors, and turn out such a miserable, mediocre copy of what was nearly a perfect film.
Same with the remake of Total Recall, that was a pale shadow of the original. SFX do not a movie make.
Previously I mentioned "The Fall" ... we are coming to the end of season 2 ... and we both find it one of the most disturbing portrayals of a serial murderer. I am not sure I am "recommending" it - it has a strong story line, good acting, but a disturbing portrayal of a cold killer.
We watching this weekend "The Two Faces of January" -- certainly do recommend this one.
And we stumbled across a series which has been produced as a prequel to the famous Inspector Morse series. It is called "Endeavour" (Morse lovers (such as I am of the books, and my wife of the TV shows will understand the naming)) and we watched the first/pilot episode and we now buy the Series 1 + Series 2 combination pack for Christmas.
I've heard "The Fall" is quite good, albeit disturbing as you say. I think I'm going to have to watch it. I felt the same way about the HBO series "True Detectives" with the Louisiana ritualistic serial murders of kids and women, that was a seriously messed up situation. But great drama.
I'm about to start binge watching American Horror Story. I've watched one and a half of the first season episodes and it's strange and promising, each season has the same actors but is a completely different story. My sister in law has been after me to watch it. I thought what I've seen was promising, but accidentally caught maybe the 6th episode or so of the current season last week, holy carp! Now I'm got to watch it up to that point, I DVR'd the current season, man that was weird and creepy.

Like in a lot of those old 50's sci-fi movies and Comics... No matter how the (probably all male) Aliens looked, they were always going for the hot earth-women. Probably more attractive than their own females...

Watched the movie "Frequency" last night, very surprising and thought provoking film. One you had to pay attention to, lots of strange things and philosophy in it. Delightful to find a movie that makes you think, both during and after. Well worth watching.

I mean "Frequencies" not "Frequency." The latter is a pretty good film, the former is just a stunning bit of thought provoking scifi that relies totally on the plot and story and nothing on special effects, there aren't any. Proof that scifi can be a good movie and that most of what passes for scifi isn't.

Two movies to mention, both at about opposite ends of the spectrum.
First, The Grand Budapest Hotel. Absolutely delightful, funny, colorful little fantasy piece that takes place in a mythical central European country between WWI and WWII. It's one of those movies where just about every bit part is played by a famous actor, and involved a murder mystery. Well worthy of the good reviews it's received, highly recommended.
Second, a movie called Pathology. This is about a polar opposite to the first film, it involves a group of medical students who compete with each other to commit a perfect murder. As each victim gets routed thru the hospital for an autopsy, they gather while performing the autopsy and see if any of the other students can discern if it was a murder or not. This is a fascinating psychological drama, but dark, grim, and extremely grotesque and gory. Quite a shock ending as well, which I won't mention in case you want to watch it but it was a shock, and gruesome as can be. If you can handle these kinds of things I can recommend it as well.

Something about fuzzy balls...
Speaking of balls, I just watched an outstanding psychological drama, if an unsettling one, called "Hard Candy." Ellen Page plays this 14 year old girl (allegedly, you're never completely sure of her age) who tracks down this pedophile photographer by watching him in various teen chat rooms. She goes to his place, and eventually drugs him, ties him up, and both psychologically and physically abuses him until he confesses what he's done. I see very few dramas like this where the acting, writing, etc. are truly exceptional, but this is one of them. You don't really know where this is going, or who, if anyone, to feel sympathetic too. Yes, the man turns out to be a horrific person, but so is the girl in what she does, that kind of planning denotes a true psychopath with sadistic tendencies, regardless of whether her victim deserved it or not. I started watching it with little interest while also reading a book, wound up putting the book down a few minutes into it and focusing all my attention on the movie.
