Millemissen:

Not as pretty perhaps - but....

There is a tv - and there is a BV.

That can be amended by Leonard Cohen himself ...

Christmas carols in a makeshift system in the dining room:  107.7 FM Orlando (don't know the call letters) on a new (for me) McIntosh MAC 1500 -> Beovox S40 (so modded at this point they're hardly S40s now).

Rolling Stones Goat's Head Soup LP on BG4002/M70 system (back to proper listening). Found this decent copy at the FLURS complete with minty insert.

The winter static electricity is starting to affect LP playback. I have a Zerostat that I bought back in the 80's for $25. I see those things sell for $100 now. What a rip off!

These occasions are getting seldom, even here in Mexico prices for vinyl goes up by the hour, I have a couple of her records and one CD I play them often. Good find, congrats, and may Buddha bless your Xmas

Same here Soren but then it all depends on what is "in" at the moment. I also bought several other LP's including some new vinyl so Kyle let me have that one. He had set it behind the counter for me because he knew i might be interested. I had given him some of my duplicate Francoise Hardy LP's. so I guess what goes around comes around.

That said after listening to the LP it all sounded so familiar and lo and behold i already had a copy of Sweet Souvenirs but on a different label. What to do now ?

I should also mention, all these Xmas songs and Danish folk songs we had to learn in school, I still remember most of them, and sing them occasionally, if I dont remember the lyrics I look them up on internet and try again. The neighbors didnt protest yet. When I was a kid we sang the Xmas songs, on Xmas eve, walking or dancing around the Xmas tree, that was before the gifts was distributed, so you had to sing well. I dont know if they do it anymore, its too long ago I had a Xmas in DK. I´m sure Millemissen will tell us.

If we were with my mothers family we would go to Church (lutheran of course) for a brief service then it was down to the basement of the church for the big dinner/party complete with music, singing, candy and small gifts from Santa and of course some good old fashioned foul lutefisk. Usually only after or with chasers of schnapps or some other form of liquid courage. Lots of skol, smak goot and other such back slapping as folks began to unwind and get properly lubricated.

These celebrations still go on in the rural parts of the northern plains as they always have but in the cities now it has been mostly forgotten. Now I suppose they watch whatever Xmas crap is on TV and eat whatever is current or trendy.

If we celebrated with my dads family it was down to Florida, no church, a fake palm xmas tree in the living room, and Brenda Lee singin Rockin Around the Christmas Tree on the record player. The meal was ham and treats were lots of fresh oranges and grapefruits.

Quite the contrast.

They do - in fact that is very common still.

Especially if you have kids in the family - after all you'd have to be enough people to built the dancing chain around the tree.

At my/our place we don't do that - never did.

After all, these 'crap-christmas-family-rules' of our parents was, what we rebelled against in our youth Stick out tongue

Living in Germany - even if our house is located less that 500 meters from the danish/german border - for over 30 years now, has given me/us some other perspectives of christmas, and has led to other family traditions. The german way of celebrating christmas is different from the danish!

Of course I have 'calmed down' a bit over the years. But I still find it a bit funny to see people dancing around the christmas tree, singing the first verse (most people don't remember more than the first - if at all) of several christmas song. Often it sounds awfull Embarrassed

There is a welknown danish christmas song with these lines:

'først skal træet vises, siden skal det spises'.

Which means: at first we will have to admire the christmas tree - then it can be eaten.

In older days the gifts were in small cornets of paper on the tree amongst the other decoration - the gifts were goodies!!!

Things have changed - for most people nowadays christmas is about exchanging (often expensive) gifts, having lots of food on the table (roast duck) and - more than - enough to drink.

But it is also about calming down after a stressy december - (preparing for the above).

And...certainly it is about being together in the family for a couple of days.

Well, if you're a collector, you keep them both since they are technically two different records.

After buying one too many duplicates of things I already had, I cataloged everything in Excel and carry the spreadsheets on my phone at all times.

I am SO excited, my first NEW LP album arrives tomorrow: Bette Midler’s “It’s the Girls.”

Been working on my cobbled-together Beogram 8000 which was yelling at me for lubrication. That fixed noticed the aluminum plate was slightly warped…. that took a little longer. Then I decided to try one last time to get the black cover back on the tonearms and finally noticed that I have the wrong box, so I “adjusted” it by carving out the necessary notches.

With everything done and looking good the sound was terrible. Don’t have to think twice why with a MMC6000. OMG this was a world-class clump of crud….. looked like I ran the stylus through the lint filter on the dryer!

Stylus cleaned and magic!

As such the Beogram 8000 gets to be the record player of choice for my new Bette Midler album.

With the little help of a friend I could listen to Joe Cocker ...

But I feel in a mood like in Cat Steven's song "Lady d'Arbanville" (Not the joke about his absent girlfriend, more about some people who really died the last few weeks)

I have no Joe Cocker (unless it's a buried 45 some where). Listening to Traffic Mr. Fantasy LP in the dining room. An old favorite.

I don't listen to enough Traffic.

Funnily enough nowadays, YouTube knows what's playing right now for example on your car radio and complains if it recognizes copyrighted or otherwise limited material, tells you what it is and then offers to remove it from the soundtrack or live with the possibly limited audience. If you want to see a winter wonderland, watch me drive to pick up the Beogram 6000 I bought last night:

http://youtu.be/52vNeNBzgfE

...but don't come back to tell me I just wasted 15 minutes of your life, because I'm telling it already now Big Smile Sorry for the false white balance until the windscreen clears and the camera gets a grip.

Or, as next year will be 150 years from Jean Sibelius' birth, spend your time better and listen to one of the most loved Christmas songs in Finland, incidentally also number 31 in the Finnish Lutheran hymn book. This is one of the songs I need to hear each Crimbo or it just wouldn't be proper.

WOW!

That’s all I gotta say!

Vinyl is back, and better than ever.

I just received the East West Records Bette Midler “It’s the Girls” two record set and it just blew me away.

The sound quality is remarkable. Bette’s voice is absolutely REAL and I am not kidding. At one point background sounds were so realistic that I actually left the room to answer the phone, which wasn’t ringing.

I played the first record, which is PINK by the way on the Beomaster 2400/Beogram 4200 in part because this set up has the S75 speakers. Wonderful! I was impressed.

Then I played the second record on the Beomaster 4400/Beogram 8000 and OMG, I couldn’t believe it….. even better! The Beomaster 4400 can play at higher volume (when it is in the mood) and the Beogram 8000 with its MMC6000 cartridge has an advantage over my aging MMC20CL in the 4002.

The whole package is FIRST-RATE top to bottom, the song selection, the delivery, the POIN records, and the pressing….. obviously they didn’t forget how.

If you like the girl groups of the sixties along with the unstoppable Bette Midler, take a pass on the CD and spring for the LP’s which are wonderful!

Last night we tuned past the Royal Command Performance at the London Palladium that was being given to Mrs Cambridge and what's 'is name ...

Bette was on stage doing a number - and it was great - and she looked fabulous. She radiated sheer star power through the BV ... she is welcome to singe my eyebrows any day !!!

OK guys, is it OFFICIAL; the new Bette Midler album “It’s the Girls” is amazing: Amazing, fantastic, remarkable….. oh I gotta say it, stunning.

Today I had the opportunity to play the LP on the mighty McIntosh 2255 and my magnificent Beogram 4000 combination. (My God I LOVE this turntable!)

I chose the 45 rpm version of “Be My Baby” and at 175 watts per channel (I was using a rare touch of “maturity” in not pressing the volume further) and the performance sounded REAL. That is to say R E A L!

If you like Bette Midler I say buy this LP record. If it doesn’t sound exactly like Bette Midler is singing right in your home, demand your money back.

The two-record set is superb, not least of which due to the clever PINK record pressing, but esthetics aside, the sound quality is astonishing.

This record was by far my BEST Christmas gift.

Happy New Year everyone!

Jeff

… when a certain Stephan Eicher (now famous in french speaking countries for songs I’d never listen to) made quite progressive music. Playing tips: "Film 2" or "Hinter den Bergen" …

My A3 with a cool beer after five hours of "spring" cleaning on a 39C day ... cool music and cold beers in the evening warmth ...

Five minutes later and Helga is getting along with the Viking just fine thank you Big Smile

But Jeff Buckley has been "over shadow" by the garden as the declining sun changes the lighting and contrasts.

Speaking of constraints the A3 / iPad's random play has moved on to Alison Krass and Union Station.

Come on, Jeff, stop being so vague.  How do you really feel about the new Bette Midler album?

Hi Søren and Rich,

Yea a little over kill on the Bette Midler promotion, as if I were an LP salesperson, but the truth is, the LP is remarkable.

Thanks guys for the New Year’s wishes, which I return in kind. Happy New Year!

The only flaw in the slaw for me is my mother unexpectedly died December 31st morning. Just destroyed New Years for me in Victoria.

My mother and I shared a very special relationship…. very, so as a tribute : this is my mom and I.

Very sorry to hear that Jeff, my condolences, both my parents died years ago, its like losing a piece of one self, you never get over it, but you learn to live with it.

Hi Søren,

Thank you.

I am still in the utter and complete disbelief stage. This only happened two days ago.

Most of the time I am fine, not happy and a bit depressed…. and then always without the slightest warning I start crying. Honest, I never see or feel it coming.

The last “episode” hit when I posted the picture of my mother and I, and in closing the page said to myself, “Goodbye mom” and the intense crying just started.

Wow, hit number two in retelling this right now. I think I found a trigger, which I am going to avoid from now on.

I know we adjust and I will too, but right now it is just plain awful.

Thanks for the kind remarks.

Jeff
